Type: Refers to the general product type.
- Holster
- Generally a snug fitting pouch in which to carry a gun.
- Slide
- Same as a holster but usually has an open end where the gun's muzzle sticks out. Many times can accommodate similar guns with different barrel lengths.
- Fanny Pack
- A small waist mounted pouch capable of storing a concealed firearm, among other things. Fanny packs for guns are patented by DeSantis Holster and Leather Goods.
- Mag Carrier
- Any pouch made to carry gun magazines.
- Purse
- A ladies garment that has specific provisions for concealing and easy retrieval of a gun.
- Belt
- Your pants fall down without one.

Mount: Refers to the general position on the body that the holster mounts.
- IWB
- Inside Waist Band. Puts most of the gun on the inside or your pants for optimum concealability.
- OWB
- Outside Waist Band. Made to be worn on the outside of your pants.
- Shoulder
- Shoulder harness Miami Vice style. Puts gun under your arm for crossdraw.
- Small Of back
- Mounts gun in the center of your back at your belt line.
- Thigh
- Straps to your upper thigh. Usually used in tactical or competition situations. Not very concealable.
- Ankle
- Mounts to your ankle under your pants. Usually used to hold a backup weapon.
- Pocket
- Holsters that fit in your pocket and allow you to draw from it.
- Body
- Any product that wraps around your torso or other body part. Typically is worn under all clothes and holds gun very close to body.
- Neck
- Holster that you can hang on your neck.

Mount Type: Refers to the way the product attaches to the body.
- Belt Clip
- A mount of any material (steel, kydex) that attaches to a belt that can be removed without removing the belt. Typical style is standard U shape. Also can be C or J style.
- Belt Loop
- A mount of any material (steel, kydex, leather) that attaches to a belt in which the belt needs to be passed through.
- Paddle
- A mount for OWB holsters that is much like a Belt Clip, but has a large rigid flap that helps stabilize the holster.
- Strap
- Any kind of mount that uses a strap
- Velcro
- Any kind of mount that uses Velcro. Typically for ankle mounts, but can also be used in conjunction with Belt Clips for greater concealability.
- Elastic
- Any kind of mount that uses elastic. Typically elastic and strap go hand in hand.
- Lanyard
- A mount that uses a string or thin rope. Typically used for neck mounted holsters.

Material: Refers to the material in which the main holster is made from. This typically excludes the material of any clips or other parts that do not contact the gun.
- Kydex®
- An extremely durable thermoplastic available in a range of colors, patterns, textures, and thicknesses.
- Leather
- Encompasses any kind of animal skin used to make a holster. Cow, Horse, Shark, Sheep, etc.
- Kydex® & Leather
- These holsters use both materials for the majority of the product. A leather holster with Kydex belt clips is NOT considered "Kydex & Leather", it is just "Leather".
- Nylon
- A synthetic high-strength, resilient synthetic polymer used to manufacture durable textiles.
- Carbon Fiber
- Extremely strong and light weight composite material.
- Other
- Any other material not covered in the other choices, such as Neoprene, or plastics.

Cant: Refers to the angle in which the holster holds the gun in relation to your body.

- Gun is held straight up or in a parallel axis to your body
- Adjustable
- The holster has the provisions to adjust the cant
- Fwd: X-Y deg
- The holster holds the gun with a forward tilt, meaning the rear sight is farther forward than the muzzle. Typically a forward cant gives better concealability and facilitates faster strong side draw.
- Reverse (Crossdraw)
- The holster is made to be mounted weak side. Gun is held in a reverse cant to better facilitate the crossdraw.

- Low
- For the purpose of this site, low ride height refers to holsters that place the front edge of the grip in line or lower that the center of the belt.

- Holsters that have provisions that allow the user to adjust the ride height.
